Hey all!
I wanted to ask for some help on something very important to me. I never post work by other photographers and I hate this new pinning feature on Tumblr but…
My friend Jonathan Waiter was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma (stage 3 or 4). He’s a great artist here in NY and I want to share my professional respect. Like most independent artists in the US, he doesn’t have insurance and, on top of that, hIs recovery will take time so he probably won’t be ready to work for a little while. He is going to need some financial help.
Lymphoma is curable and I’m positive he’ll be fine. But I couldn’t possibly imagine the weight of bills following his treatment so I want to do what I can to help by getting the word out. Please DONATE HERE!

I have mad respect for Jonathan and his contribution to the NY art scene. Even if you haven’t seen his work or are familiar with his art, you’ve probably seen work that has been influenced by him. Jonathan has an incredible ability to create beautiful portraits of ugly moments. His work is a bit uncomfortable, fun to look at, and definitely creates a reaction from viewers. I always find his work consistent and fresh and they definitely speak well for his dark sense of reality.

People read stories about the artists living in NY in the 1920’s, the 60’s and the 80’s. We romanticize and celebrate these dead artists who lived uncomfortable lives so that they can be the medium to express what’s happening with the rest society. But most modern artists like Jonathan are completely unknown to the mainstream during their lives. You don’t see us written up in Vogue or Art in America. Our work isn’t proven commodities used by ground-floor galleries. True success takes time to mature and that is what Jonathan is doing.

We’re not 18 year old photographers shooting fashion that looks like fashion. We aren’t yet shooting the covers of Love or Harpers like the veterans who paid their dues before us. Like me, Jonathan is just a normal guy working his ass off while establishing himself in NY as a serious artist. He’s simply doing art that is driving him. He’s paid a lot of dues and it’s now his time we say “thanks for being an independent artist.”

The money is to cover living and medical expenses not covered by Medicaid. The goal that was set was $10k (it’s currently at $6,691). I suspect it could go MUCH higher than that.
Reblog and MAKE IT RAIN, PEOPLE!
Thank you,
MD

I might be a bit late but every cent counts guys! We all know how expensive medical bills can get. Do your part. Reblog!...
